Remember the Story of the Tortoise and the Hare?

Written on July 2, 2007 by Tezza

Tortise and HareThere once was a speedy hare who bragged about how fast he could run. Tired of hearing him boast, Slow and Steady, the tortoise, challenged him to a race. All the animals in the forest gathered to watch.

Hare ran down the road for a while and then and paused to rest. He looked back at Slow and Steady and cried out, “How do you expect to win this race when you are walking along at your slow, slow pace?”

Hare stretched himself out alongside the road and fell asleep, thinking, “There is plenty of time to relax.”

Slow and Steady walked and walked. He never, ever stopped until he came to the finish line.

The animals who were watching cheered so loudly for Tortoise, they woke up Hare.

Hare stretched and yawned and began to run again, but it was too late. Tortoise was over the line.

After that, Hare always reminded himself, “Don’t brag about your lightning pace, for Slow and Steady won the race!”

Remember, it’s not one big burst of action that gets you ahead…it’s continual action. It’s thousands of small steps taken consistently and with persistence that gets you to the finish line EVERY TIME.

So why is it so easy to forget the tenets distilled in this simple fable. We commit to a new weight loss goal and take an immediate burst of action only to waver weeks or months into it when the results don’t seem as forthcoming as we had wanted.

So if you have had trouble making the finish line then next time you have a goal you feel passionate about achieving follow these simple guidelines to ensure your success:

  1. Be clear about what you want. You need to have a clear finish line in order to know when you have finished the race so to speak. If you don’t know what the finish line looks like then how will you ever know if you have achieved your goal. So rather than stating your goal as “I want to have more money or I want to lose weight” be as specific as possible and ensure that is measurable. You would restate your goal to “I will have X amount of dollars by a certain date or I will weigh X kgs by a certain time frame”.
  2. Write down the steps that you need to take. The crucial aspect of being able to complete a goal is to be taking measurable action consistently. Writing out a clear set of action steps ensure that you are continually moving towards your goal. You wouldn’t be expected to be able to bake a cake without knowing the ingredients and the steps in which the ingredients are to be mixed together. So it is with any goal that you have in life. If you don’t know the steps that you are going to need to take in order to achieve the goal then you run the risk of sitting on the sidelines like the hare instead of committing to the finish line like the tortoise.
