Practical Tips For The Camino de Santiago

1

Written on April 21, 2008 by Tezza

The idea of pilgrimage is hardly a recent phenomenon. It has been going on for thousands of years and many different religions have their own pilgrimage traditions. The Camino de Santiago in modern day times attracts people from all walks of life, ages and religious affiliations. They come for a myriad of personal reasons and you will find religious reasons are now not as common as they once were. If you’re planning a pilgrimage to Santiago then here are a few practical considerations to think about to ensure your experience is memorable for all the right reasons.

To Go Alone Or With Someone

The great debate for any traveller is whether to go alone or with someone. In Winter Camino you will find many pilgrims go it alone as they are in search of answers or just for practical reasons. Summer pilgrimage brings in large crowds of people across Europe on holidays and you’ll find more groups on the Camino. Whether you go with someone or by yourself is a personal decision. When Was The Last Time You…

2

Written on April 9, 2008 by Tezza

When was the last time you sat outside on a clear night and did nothing but just stare at the stars lighting up the night sky. Do you remember the last time you woke up in time to appreciate the sunrise or cleared your schedule to just do nothing all day but veg out.

For me it took a journey thousands of miles to Spain to truly appreciate the gift that life is and soak in the everyday moments. It´s amazing how many years just get wasted away in the busyness of life and get consumed by meaningless deadlines and projects which at the time seemed so important. It is so easy to just get caught in the routine of life that we confuse living with motion.

I realised that it takes a conscious decision everyday to make each day truly count. You are always going to have some pressing engagement, project and your to-do list is forever going to be a never ending list but if you take a decision every morning to take time to live each day then it´s amazing what life throws your way. A Day In The Life On The Camino de Santiago

Written on April 2, 2008 by Tezza

On occasions I´ve come across posts by bloggers writing about their typical day. While it´s interesting to see a glimpse as to what they get up to on any given day I´ve never considered my typical day worth designating a blog post to.

Since my days are currently spent on the Camino I thought I might give those interested or possibly considering undertaking a pilgrimage of their own a small glimpse to a day in the life of a pilgrim on the Camino de Santiago.

To undertake a pilgrimage it needn´t have to necessarily be the Camino de Santiago. There are many others to choose from both throughout Europe and elsewhere and it needn´t have to be religious in nature. Continue reading! »

A Night At Barcelona Airport

1

Written on March 27, 2008 by Tezza

My introduction to Spain was hardly what I had imagined. After a grueling 11 and a half hour flight from Hong Kong to Frankfurt and then a three hour transfer before getting on a one hour flight from Frankfurt to Barcelona I ended up arriving at 11pm. This wasn´t surprising since I was well aware of the arrival time when I got my ticket. However, I had originally thought that I could just make my way to the train or bus station and onwards to the start of my Camino de Santiago.

Little did I know that everything would be shut tighter than Fort Knox and that the Spanish embrace the concept of Siesta with gusto. So with no accommodation booked and being well past midnight I decided to sit it out at the airport until around 5am when things got going again. Continue reading! »

Hiking In Hong Kong With HK Trampers

Written on March 20, 2008 by Tezza

A little known fact about Hong Kong is it offers those keen on experiencing the great outdoors an abundance of walking trails. Hong Kong is largely made up of mountain ranges formed millions of years ago from volcanic activity. While no active volcanoes exist today it´s legacy is whole regions that are largely uninhabited due to the terrain.

The vast majority of Hong Kong´s population live in the low lying regions close to the coast and thus you have huge tracts of beautiful, untouched national parks with wonderfully maintained walking trails. The tourism information centres can provide you with maps and once on the trail there is sufficient information provided to keep you from getting lost. Continue reading! »

Ian from Brave New Traveler wrote a great post listing 12 Personal Travel Websites That Will Make You Quit Your Day Job. While a few have already been mentioned on this blog the list is an exciting collection of travelers who have in their own way went in search of adventure and meaning in their lives.

Having been on the road for the past month I’ve had the pleasure of meeting travelers from all walks of life and from all age ranges. They travel for different reasons but a kindred spirit connects us all. Some are searching for something, others are running away from something and yet others don’t fall into either group. The Slow Guide To Hong Kong - Part 2

2

Written on March 4, 2008 by Tezza

TempleThis is the second installment to The Slow Guide To Hong Kong. While guides are great for practical research and disseminating information into a practical format it should never replace the spirit of adventure which took you so far from your home in the first place. At the end of the day guides are really just a reflection of one traveler’s experience and here is my continued synopsis of Hong Kong as viewed from my eyes. In this part we’ll cover the more important aspects of traveling Hong Kong such as food and shopping.

Eating

Hong Kong is rich with Asian cuisine and is a wonderful place to try out all your favourite Chinese dishes. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from and the ever favourite Yum Cha is widely available. If you’re adventurous why not stop by a local diner. It is usually filled with locals which is always a good sign when your looking for authentic food abroad. Don’t be put off by the plain furniture or the lack of English menu or pictures. You can always just point to a dish that looks appetizing from one of the diners near you or hope that someone speaks a little English. Continue reading! »
