Inspiring People You Meet On The Road

Written on February 26, 2008 by Tezza

YaretsWhile walking along the promenade at Tsim Sha Shui I came across Vladmir and his bike with a few admiring specatators nearby. Normally had I been at home I would have walked straight on by with maybe a glance in his direction. Luckily this was in Hong Kong and I generally stop at anything that looks interesting.

Friends all know that I’ve long since been a big fan of Ewin McGregor and his documentary “Long Way Round”. Ewin and his good friend Charley go on an epic 19,000 mile journey by motorbike from London to New York via Europe and Asia. Watching people have a dream and then pursue it in spite of all odds is something inspirational and I have a great deal respect for.

Vladimir though makes the 19,000 mile journey by Ewin seem like a bit of a teaser, like downloading a piece of shareware software but discovering half the functions turned off. Vladimir has traveled more than 580,000km on his bike since May 2000. What makes this more amazing is he is deaf and he is in his 60’s when most people are thinking about retiring from life.

He has such an amazing spirit for adventure and was immediately personable as soon as you greet him. He happily passed out small laminated cards with information about his journey in many different languages to those who were curious. He was always accomodating to peoples request for photos and he patiently communicated with anyone who had questions either written down or mimed to him.

Vladimir has traveled to more than 68 countries and he is living out his biggest dream everyday of his life which can’t be said for most people. He will no doubt continue to travel the globe and I wish him a safe journey ahead.

I’ve always dreamed of traveling. I’m going to make that dream a reality this year. Even if it’s just a short trip. Thanks for inspiring me! =)

Jonathan, Best of luck with following your dream, you´ll never regret taking time out of your to travel. I know for many years I put of travel and I´m glad I finally took the plunge. Whether it´s a short trip or long trip you´ll get what you want out of it and maybe one day the short trips turn into one big one.
