How To Manage Your Money Travelling

Written on July 29, 2007 by Tezza

It wasn’t long ago that the most popular way to take money overseas was by buying travellers cheques. There is nowadays a steady decline in the use of travellers cheques in favour of the more popular credit cards.

Here are some handy tips to help make using your credit card overseas drama free:

1. While credit cards are advertised as being accepted world wide, this is not necessarily the case when going to remote places of the world. Outside of urban and tourist areas in a lot of the world, credit card acceptance can be extremely limited and is usually costly with surcharges of up to 20%! This is especially the case in developing countries. Don’t count on being able to use credit cards anywhere but posh hotels and restaurants when travelling to certain parts of the globe.

2. Before travelling in a foreign country call your credit card’s toll free number and advise them of the location(s) that you’ll be using the card and the dates. This will help you avoid embarrassment when your card company has suspended your card just as you are making your next purchase.

3. If you are paranoid about something happening to your credit card, then you can always carry two credit cards with you when you travel. Keep one in your possession, and the other at your hotel, either in your locked luggage, or hidden well in your room. There is a chance that you may be attacked while “out on the town”, and lose everything, but then there’s always that other credit card in your room you can depend on.

4. Before leaving check for excessive wear & tear and order a replacement if you don’t want to be stuck abroad with a useless demagnetized card.
