“What is happiness, and how can we all get some? Buddhist monk, photographer and author Matthieu Ricard has devoted his life to these questions, and his answer is influenced by his faith as well as by his scientific turn of mind: We can train our minds in habits of happiness. Interwoven with his talk are stunning photographs of the Himalayas and of his spiritual community. ” - TED

Following are some useful quotes taken from Matthieu speech on Habits of Happiness:

“On Happiness or well being…it seems that no one wakes up in the morning thinking may i suffer the whole day, which means somehow consciously or not, directly or indirectly, the short or the long term, whatever we do, whatever we hope, whatever we dream somehow is related to a deep desire for happiness. well being is not just a mere pleasurable sensation, it is a deep sense of serenity and fulfillment. A state that actually pervades and underlies all emotional states and all the joys and sorrows that comes ones way.”

“A control of the outer world, is limited, temporary and illusionary.”

“Experience. We have to know from ourselves that there are certain states of minds that are conducive to wellbeing and there are those that are adverse to our wellbeing.”

“Some of these are anger, hatred, jealousy, arrogance, obsesive desire, they don’t leave us in such a good state after we experience it. It also doesn’t help others happiness.”

“Mind training matters. This is not just a luxury, its not a supplementary vitamin for the soul. Its something that is going to determine the quality of every element of our lives. We are ready to spend 50 years in education, we love to do jogging for our fitness, we do all kinds of things to remain beautiful. Yet we spend surprisingly little time taking care of what matters most. The way our mind functions.”
